Rebuilding Schools Sustainably | July 2008
On July 24-27, 2008, the first design workshops and site visits were held in conjunction with the highly collaborative initiative to sustainably rebuild schools following the May 12 Sichuan earthquake. The goal is to deploy sustainable design guidelines and standardized system design methods as a protocol to be used in the construction of new schools in the Sichuan earthquake recovery area and, as a catalyst construct a pilot school using the protocol.
The design workshops and site visits were organized by the China US Center for Sustainable Development and hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, led by Director General Li Bingdi. Members of the Design Team were represented by Wen Zhao of Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects, Qi-Song (Kent) Yu of Degenkolb Engineering and Bill Hart of Carleton Hart Architecture.
