Lakeside School Serves the Community | July 2008
Lakeside School of Seattle, Washington returned in July for two weeks of community service in the Village of Huangbaiyu and Nanfen District in Liaoning Province. Villagers welcomed the twelve students and three teachers into their homes for the third year in a row. The China-US Center supported the planning and implementation of the program with the Center’s Zhong Ping joining Lakeside in the village.
The program is self organized with the local community and this year responded to requests for tutoring in spoken English for grades 1-7. The tutoring was judged a success by the villagers in improving communication skills and learning more about the world outside the village. It was also fun for all. As part of the community service, Lakeside School made a donation of English language books to the Sishanling District School.
The Lakeside students formed an entrepreneurial team with a village baker to sell his goods at a district market. Asked about the results, the students reported they “sold out the store.” A badminton tourney was the highlight of a community event.
In a closing ceremony, the local Educational Director, Mr. Zhou Bingquan, thanked Lakeside for their commitment of providing service to the local community and invited Lakeside School to return again in 2009. A teary departure testified to the friendships established during the brief but very close time together.
