Huangbaiyu village and Sishanling elementary/middle school in Nanfen District, Benxi Municipality, Liaoning Province invited students and teachers from the Lakeside School Global Service Learning Program in Seattle, Washington to return to the village again this summer to organize a community service and education enhancement program.

Eleven students and three teachers from Lakeside participated from July 10 – August 2, expanding last year’s program almost three fold. Due to the very positive experience from 2006, the villagers and Lakeside School decided to arrange individual home stays this year to enable more villagers to have personal interaction with their Lakeside family members.

At the request of the Nanfen Education Bureau, the 2007 program began with a workshop that included more than 50 local teachers interested in sharing experiences and learning from Lakeside teachers’ best practices in teaching English as a second language.

The three week agenda included developing educational programming to address some of the learning gaps identified by local school administrators, environmental and language exchanges, abundant cultural experiences and hands-on community service. Lakeside made a generous donation of English language books to the school and, in a closing ceremony, the local Party Secretary, Mr. Liu Yaguang, and District Governor, Mr. Lin Aimin, thanked Lakeside for their commitment of providing service to the local community and invited Lakeside School to return again in 2008.
