The China-US Center for Sustainable Development is pleased to announce the appointment of Jim McIlvenny of the Dow Chemical Company to the Board of Councilors. The Board of Councilors provides strategic guidance for the Center’s operations and leadership in the development of new initiatives.
Mr. McIlvenny has been the President of Dow Greater China since 2004. In 2006 he was appointed as President of Dow Asia Pacific & Greater China broadening his responsibilities to embrace Dow’s presence across the whole region, capitalizing on the many synergies that exist across Asia Pacific while ensuring the Company’s focus on Greater China. Mr. McIlvenny is based in Shanghai, China. Mr. McIlvenny graduated from the University of Sydney with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
William A. McDonough, Chair of the US Board of Councilors, stated: “I am delighted to welcome Jim McIlvenny to the Board. Jim’s leadership position in China and Dow’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in product and technology design make them a wonderful addition to the Center.”
The Center is also pleased to announce that Mr. McIlvenny will be joined by two other members of the Dow team in leading the work with the China US Center: Mr. Scott Noessen, Global Director of Sustainable Development for the Dow Chemical Company, and Mr. Ningke Peng, Director of Government Affairs, Greater China, Dow Chemical (China) Investment Co., Ltd.

In 2006, Andrew Liveris, President, CEO and Chairman of Dow, announced the company’s sustainability goals for the next decade – an ambitious multi-part program to address some of the most pressing economic, social and environmental concerns facing the global community. The goals included a commitment to achieving at least three breakthroughs to address the world’s ability to solve the challenges of affordable and adequate food supply, decent housing, sustainable water supplies, or improved personal health and safety.
In China, Dow has been active at all levels in corporate responsibility and environmental leadership. Dow is in the third year of collaboration with the State Environmental Protection Administration to support a national cleaner production pilot project. To date, nineteen enterprises and 250+ trainees have participated in the program. Dow has also been working in partnership with The State Administration of Work Safety on a joint, national demonstration project on the safe management of hazardous chemicals. The project is aimed at fostering and promoting a better understanding and awareness among small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the importance of chemical safety management.
